Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck has gone absolute full throttle since his unexpected early return from a major injury this autumn. As soon as Schlotterbeck received the green light to return to action<\/a>, BVB head coach Niko Kovac immediately thrust the 25-year-old into the starting XI against VfL Wolfsburg three weeks ago. Since then, Schlotterbeck has logged 290 of a potential 360 minutes of action.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Saturday’s league draw with RB Leipzig<\/a> constituted the third consecutive league fixture in which Schlotterbeck went the full 90 minutes in the league. Schlotterbeck got a break against Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League midweek, playing 20 minutes off the bench against the Basque Athletic Club.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One assumes that Schlotterbeck will be keen to play as much as possibly for the German national team over the coming October international break.<\/a> The Waiblingen-native was – for quite some time – one of the players overlooked by current Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Schlotterbeck lobbied hard for a return until Nagelsmann reintegrated him into the team ahead of the Summer 2024 Euros. The defender’s springtime injury nevertheless leaves him with only two caps in the current 2025 calendar year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Schlotterbeck expressed his annoyance at his club’s result on Saturday when speaking to Sky Germany<\/strong> afterwards. Having gotten his frustration over a “stupid set-piece goal<\/em>“, Schlotterbeck shifted towards a more enthusiastic tone when discussing the national team.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s an important recognition for someone who didn’t play football for six months then played only three games,<\/em>” Schlotterbeck noted. “Being nominated is a<\/em> sign of being rated highly by Julian [Nagelsmann].”<\/em><\/p>\n

“I hope he gets a few minutes against Luxembourg, but only a few,<\/em>” Kovac added at the post-match press conference. “And then he should show what he can do against Northern Ireland and help the German national team win.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n
